The Laguna/Elk Grove area was established in 1850 as a hotel and stage stop about 15 miles south of historic Sutter's Fort. The area soon became a crossroads for business, entertainment, mail service and agriculture. Acting as a "home base" for gold miners in nearby communities, the region played an important role in the early gold rush and the statehood history of California. A close-knit community soon evolved with a distinctly rural and western lifestyle.

The Laguna area had its start in agriculture, which is still a big part of the local economy. The community is also home to high technology firms, professional services and commercial and retail enterprises. The economic and social climate of Laguna is extremely bright thanks to its young, stable, family-oriented population; its nearly 150-year-old rural environment; its proximity to employment opportunities, and an abundance of local businesses.

Laguna is one of the fastest growing communities in Sacramento County. It is ideally situated a mere four miles south of Sacramento, offering an easy commute via Highway 99 and Interstate 5. In addition to the numerous cultural venues in Sacramento, sports fans aren't far from a Sacramento Kings game. Of course, Elk Grove County Park is host to the annual Senior Gold Rush Golf Tournament and other local parks offer a wide variety of recreational choices from boating, fishing, baseball, soccer and tennis to swimming, horseshoes and equestrian events. Other area attractions include the Laguna Creek Parkway; Stone Lakes Refuge, which was recently dedicated as a National Wildlife Refuge; and the Cosumnes River Preserve.
